IRS lists 2020 tax scams

Fake payments with repayment demands

In this scam, a con artist gets the taxpayer’s personal information, including Social Security number or individual taxpayer identification number, files a bogus tax return and has the refund deposited in the taxpayer’s bank account. Then the scammer calls them, claiming to be an IRS employee, and demanding they return the money to the IRS immediately by buying gift cards.
