The Tax Cuts and Job Act eliminated some popular tax deductions like home equity loan interest for 2018, but one category that remains on the Internal Revenue Service’ acceptable list are medical expenses. And the range of allowable deductions is broad and, in many cases, unexpected. These deductions have to be itemized in order to claim them, and beginning in 2019, all taxpayers may deduct the amount of total unreimbursed allowable medical care expenses for the year that exceeds 10% of their adjusted gross income.
